Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold
August 30, 2007
Here’s a recent posting from a Filipino forum based in Singapore (pinoysg.com)..
mga kafated kung sino man sa inyo ang di pa nakakabalita, 5 pinoy engineers na po ang napauwi ng MOM kahapon sa salang “pamemeke” ng certificates.
as in ang lulufet ng ating mga kabayan, nagwo work d2 sa s’pore for almost 3 years at now lang nabuking ang kanilang ginawang krimen este palusot.
Who’s at fault in this one? The one who falsified his documents or the back-stabbing fellow?
I don’t know. Because the latter wants to say that the former shouldn’t even be here working, while the former risked everything to earn an honest living by lying.
This is not about taking a shot at OFWs. Nor is this about Malu Fernandez. This is about us Filipinos and our mentality.
We’ve shown the world that we can do anything once we unite for a common cause. That’s why we have EDSA1, EDSA2, and yes, even EDSA3 (even though the government doesn’t accept that there was an EDSA3). And recently, OFWs were able to humble the infamous Malu Fernandez.
Throughout all of these, did we resolve any issues?
Why don’t we just start to change and make things better for us Filipinos? It doesn’t need to take another EDSA revolution or another chain of angry OFWs.
It starts with oneself.
Blaming Is Our Business… And Business Is Good!

It’s supposed to be “Killing Is My Business… And Business Is Good!” Megadeth’s debut album name. But hey, as long as it captures your attention.
I’m a bit surprised by this. Check these clips out..

Cruel Maid
But this Malu Fernandez got more buzz in the web than anything.
Malu Fernandez Scandal on TVPatrol World
Doesn’t that make you wonder why?
Shame on you, media. Shame on you.
Have you ever heard of Malu Fernandez?
I’m sure by now, you’ve heard of her. The Filipina columnist who wrote an article in People Asia called “From Boracay to Greece” whom many OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers) abhor and took offense. The self-titled “Fierce and Fabulous” Malu Fernandez.
Well guess what? She resigned from her job just today because of the email complaints received by People Asia from OFWs.
Here’s a quote from that news from ABS-CBN:
To make matters worse, Fernandez wrote in her succeeding column in the “Manila Standard Today” that she was only being true to herself.
“Many people often find my direct attitude to be rude or obnoxious. I really don’t mean to be anything but true to myself,” she said.
And many OFWs were really offended by her inked words. Not just those from Dubai, but around the world. Even Singapore was not spared.
If you’re one of those who were angered by Malu Fernandez, then I think you should stop reading this post now. Because what I’m about to say is not your cup of tea.
I’m not defending Malu Fernandez nor her recent article. I’m not the one who would belittle my fellow OFWs. But what Malu Fernandez wrote is her opinion. And one’s opinion may not be entirely applicable to another person. Nor it is entirely false. To put it simply, she was just being herself.
The truth is that Malu Fernandez wrote something true. Something existing in our daily lives. Something that is perceived common by a lot of other people. .. not just Filipinos but the whole world.
Fact is, the Filipinos are not always that well accepted by other people of other countries. Guess what, so are the rest of the world. There’s always someone who makes someone’s life a living hell.
It’s the whole point of discrimination. Don’t tell me you’ve never done it in your entire life. If so, then you’re one damn good liar.
Now, people are picking on Malu Fernandez. They’re blogging, sending emails, SMS, etc.. telling how bad Malu Fernandez looks. Telling how she should look in the mirror and judge herself first. Telling everyone else that she doesn’t just deserve this resignation but she deserves to hang and burn as well.
This I ask you now, are we better than Malu Fernandez?
The fact still remains, my fellow OFWs. Malu Fernandez is just a person. You can do whatever nastiness you can with her if her life depends on your hands. But if it wasn’t Malu Fernandez who brought that up, then there’s someone else bound to do it.
You hear it in the streets. You hear it from comedy clubs. You hear it from peers. Hell, you even hear it from kids. But why is it so that we have to be angry at Malu Fernandez?
I even watched a flick called Pervert, starring Juliette Clarke and Sean Andrews. There’s a scene in that flick where Patty (Clarke) asked James (Andrews) that if he could wipe out an entire race of people, whom would he choose. James answered “Asians, oh no, make that Filipinos”.
So what?!?
Now, they’re looking for the next OFW basher. Hahaha.. shouldn’t be that hard to find.
If you’re asking me where my pride of being a Filipino is for posting this opinion out for everyone else to read, then you just need to read between the lines of this post.
I am taking Malu Fernandez’s opinion of what OFWs are by proving her wrong. I want to be the bigger person here and I don’t even need her apologies.
There’s an old adage.. “If life give you lemons, you make lemonades”.
Just something to ponder, my fellow kabayans.
