I’ve been holding back myself from writing my first blog entry for the year 09 because I want it to be a very personal entry.
I don’t want to talk about toys, comics, hobbies, shoes, basketball, politics, etc for my first entry. I want it to be all about me.
But things do change.
This morning, I got a IM from a friend asking me if I am watching CNN. Of course no because I was in the office and doing my dilly-dolly-super-duper work.
He told me that I should be watching because of Obama’s inauguration.
“It’s today?” I wondered. I’ve been so self-involved that I forgot don’t seem to mind missing out this day.
He said “Yes! We should be part of history.”
So I told myself that I’d probably catch it on TV after work. And I did.. on HBO. It’s the Inauguration Celebration. I think I caught the part where Bruce Springsteen was singing with a choir. And there were lots of people. Something like a scene in Forrest Gump where he was reunited with Jenny in Washington DC.
After that, I turned off the TV and went back to my life. That’s it. That’s my part in that sliver of history. And the same question I earlier asked my friend went back to my head.
“Would Obama have won the presidency if America wasn’t in deep shit?”
Maybe. Maybe not.
Barack Hussein Obama II, the 44th President of the United States of America and the first African-American President at it as well.
This coming from a country who immediately doubt airport passengers as terrorists just by bearing names like “Hussein”.
This coming from a country who doesn’t condone politicians who’s stained by alcoholism and drugs.
This coming from a country who have never thought highly of minorities.
But things do change.
People say that Obama is a leader who moves and inspires people. A leader in the likes of Abraham Lincoln, Washington, FDR and JFK. He who reminds Americans who they are.
But really. Is it because of who he is? Or is it because of circumstance? Remember, Obama went head-to-head with Hillary Clinton for the Democrats. The Americans could’ve chosen a white presidential candidate.
Then again, maybe they weren’t ready for a woman president. Or maybe she was just associated with her husband Bill, and that it reminds them of the past. They want to move on and shift to something that could get them out of their rut.
This reminds me of this one time when I was in a seminar for self-development. We were suppose to do a homework but we didn’t. So we were given a second chance to finish our task in class. We chose a leader to make sure everybody did their task in a given time.
The time passed, but we didn’t finished the task. So the speaker asked the class to choose a new leader to make sure that this time, everybody finished the homework.
So this time, three sibling kids volunteered to oversee the class and that everybody finished the task.
That time, we finished the task. And these siblings got the plaudits. The first one got the criticism of being laxed while the kids got the remark of being great leaders and that the elder participants reminded them of Ninoy Aquino.
So I asked them how could they say such things. How could they criticize the first leader and applaud the latter? Wasn’t it just coincidence? If we had not had the extra time to finish the task, would they say otherwise?
You know what? I got blasted by asking these questions to the class. Telling me that if what I say is true, then why didn’t I volunteered myself to take the lead?
For me, it was simple. We got extra time and we wanted to get to the next lesson, so we made sure we finished the homework. But no, they told me I’m over analyzing the result. Telling me that “the result speaks for itself.”
Everyday, I get to at least meet someone exceptional. Someone who is very good at what they do but are never given the break they deserve or are not given a second-look. Do you think they’re failure because the moment does not favor them?
The funny answer to this question is.. only time will tell.
The good thing about this is that life is a constant change.
In this financial crisis, war on terrorism, global climate change.. let’s hope that we don’t depend on Obama to turn things around. Consider this as a wakeup call.
